After two years of Covid preventing the 6th Cheshire Presidents Volunteer Awards Presentation Dinner taking place, it was finally held on Thursday 5th May 2022 at Bowdon RUFC. Unlike 2019 where Mitsubishi Motors were the RFU’s partner for the National Volunteer Awards, it is now HONDA. All Nominations from Cheshire and the Isle of Man have been made via the Honda Volunteer recognition Program. In total there were 32 nominations consisting of 85 volunteers from 21 clubs.

Nominations were grouped into three categories, Unsung Hero, Beyond Rugby and Game for all which encouraged groups of volunteers to enter as one nomination. Colin Free, President of Cheshire RFU led the judging for each category, selecting 5 nominations to go forward to Twickenham, 2 of which will be selected to go to a National Black-Tie event Honda Volunteers Dinner at Twickenham in September.

Colin Free, the Cheshire RFU President, presented Certificates to every nominee at the dinner.

The 5 Nominations selected all received Cheshire Blue Plaque. The three nominations not selected to go forward to Twickenham received their Cheshire Blue plaques first.

They were:-

Macclesfield – John Webster – Unsung Hero

Knutsford – Steve Davies, Anthony Evans – Unsung Hero

Wirral – Graham Roberts, Richard McNeil, Steve Ferguson, Phil Stokes, Ron Wilson – Unsung Hero

For the final part of the formalities, the 2 Nominations selected by Honda, to attend the National Black-Tie Volunteers Dinner at Twickenham, received a Bottle of Bollinger and Honda/RFU Rucksack in addition to the Cheshire Blue Plaques.

The successful Nominations are :-

Macclesfield – Pip Gregory – Game for All

Prenton – Brian Elkerton, Gordan Knapman, Mike Coffin, Russel Dodd, Paul Lee – Beyond Rugby

We wish them well.

The final award for the evening was the Cheshire Presidents Award, this went to Steve Bate of Chester who unfortunately could not attend the evening’s function.

A total of 109 people from 19 clubs attended the Awards Dinner which was once again a fitting way for Colin Free and the Cheshire Executive to reward the efforts of our Volunteers.

As a post Dinner event we have been notified by Twickenham that John Webster, Macclesfield RUFC, has been invited to Twickenham Stadium to attend “Behind the scenes” day.
