Cheshire U16’s Versus Bristol U16’s played at Stourbridge RFC – 3rd February 2019
Cheshire versus Bristol is a new fixture for the under 16s age group. It was in November 2017 when Bristol first contacted me to see whether or not a fixture could be arranged. With the fixture list for 2017/2018 already confirmed it was obvious that arrangements for this fixture would be for 2018/2019 season. Because of the distance and the time of year we agreed to play the games at a neutral venue. Stourbridge RFC, 4G all weather pitch, was the chosen venue.
Cheshire B 23pts – Bristol B 17pts K.O. time 1.00pm
Cheshire ‘B’ started well putting pressure immediately on the Bristol defence. Bristol held out for about 15 minutes before Carl Droy, open side flanker, powered over the line to give Cheshire a 5pts lead. Cheshire maintained their momentum and by half time were 15pts to nil to the good. There were several occasion in the first half when Cheshire were held up over the line or just short of line. Bristol came out for the second half with more determination and put pressure on the Cheshire defence, initially to no avail. A break and a well-executed try by Joe Taylor increased Cheshire’s score to 20pts. Shortly after Harry Swayne converted a penalty to give Cheshire a 23pt to nil advantage. However, Bristol suddenly woke up and started a remarkable come-back, scoring three try in the final fifteen minutes of the game, through Sam Costly, Callum Mattison and Emry Hassam who also add a conversion. The final score Cheshire B 23pts Bristol B 17pts. Well done to both teams for a very entertaining game in extremely cold conditions.
Cheshire A 10pts – Bristol A 22pts K.O. time 2.30pm
The result of this game was extremely disappointing from the Cheshire prospective. When you know the capabilities of your squad, Cheshire from the start until the finish of the game did not play to their full potential. Bristol on the other hand came out with determination and vigour to prove their superiority. Bristol were sharp, quick witted, and seized upon every opportunity that Cheshire gave them. Bristol with their inventiveness through support and ability to switch play, disrupted the Cheshire defense. The pace and intensity of the Bristol backs was impressive. The tries for Bristol came through Danny Harris, Noah Wells, Chris Packer, and Archie Grayson, with Jack Lloyd with one conversion. Scorers for Cheshire were Cyrus Kerfoot and Isaac Hardisty. The final score Bristol 22pts Cheshire 10pts.
